Proper Contact Lens Care Can Preserve Your Health

Contact lenses are vision correction devices that can provide enhanced freedom and flexibility when compared to eyeglasses. If you have a refractive error such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, contact lenses may be an excellent option.

Every eye is different, so it’s important to have your contact lenses fitted to your eyes. Poorly fitted contacts can cause discomfort, irritation, and may even damage your eye. We can help accommodate your needs with precision to ensure you are fitted with contact lenses right for you. Book a contact lens exam and fitting with our trained team in Winnipeg.

What is a Contact Lens Fitting?

When you visit us to be fitted with contact lenses, we will first perform a comprehensive eye exam to ensure your eyes are healthy. We’ll test your visual acuity to determine your contact lens prescription.

We’ll then perform a few tests to measure your eyes and give you the best recommendations on contact lenses that will fit you comfortably:

  • A keratometer will help us determine the curvature of your eyeball, which will dictate what curve and size of lens will work best for your eyes.
  • We’ll examine your eyes’ health and the quality of your tears to ensure you’re fitted with contact lenses and lens solution with a suitable composition.
  • We can recommend and order you a trial pair of lenses to use for a short length of time. During this time, we’ll invite you back for a follow-up appointment to discuss your comfort level and how you felt wearing the lenses. If you like them, we’ll put in an order for whatever type of lens you’d prefer.

Types of Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses are made of a soft, malleable material called silicone hydrogel that allows oxygen to pass through to the eye while being worn. They are easy to get used to for first-time-wearers and are comfortable.

Rigid gas permeable lenses are made of a firm plastic material and are generally smaller and last longer than soft lenses. They’re resistant to deposit buildup and give crisper, sharper vision. However, RGP lenses can be uncomfortable at first and take a little while to get used to wearing.

Contact Lens Care & Hygiene

Taking proper care of your contact lenses can prevent lens-related eye infections and damage to the eyes. Some rules to follow include:

  • Always wash your hands with antibacterial soap and water before handling your contact lenses.
  • Clean and store your contact lenses in fresh, sterile contact lens solution.
  • Disinfect your contact lenses regularly with fresh disinfectant solution.
  • Never use water or saliva to clean or store your contact lenses.
  • Remove your contact lenses before sleeping, showering, or swimming.
  • Clean and disinfect your contact lens case with solution and disinfectant, never water.
  • Replace your contact lens case every 3 months.
  • Replace your contact lenses as recommended by your optometrist.
  • Take your contact lens case, solution, and a pair of glasses with you as a backup.

If you’re experiencing discomfort or difficulties with your contact lenses, please give us a call to book an examination.
