An older woman gets her eye examined at the optometrist's office. Having regular eye exams is vital to preventing eye diseases like Glaucoma.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a term used to describe a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve. Most are progressive that often occur in individuals over the age of 40. As we age, the risk of developing glaucoma increases, so it’s essential to attend regular eye examinations to pinpoint, diagnose, and treat the early signs of glaucoma.

Underlying health conditions, like high blood pressure or diabetes, can also increase your risk of developing glaucoma. Awareness of your overall wellness can help protect your eyesight, so always remember to monitor any health or vision changes.

We are proud to have the latest technology in pressure testing, meaning there will be no puff of air on your eyes! Visit us for your test today.

Symptoms of Glaucoma

Glaucoma commonly affects both eyes, but can also only occur in only one. The early stages of glaucoma are often asymptomatic, meaning the disease can progress until eye damage is extensive. In the advanced stages, you may notice peripheral vision loss, at which point you may not be able to regain it.

Glaucoma can progress slowly over time or can happen suddenly. Attending regular comprehensive eye examinations can ensure your eyes are taken care of, and any early signs of glaucoma are detected before they worsen.

Common types of glaucoma are:

  • Open-angle glaucoma
  • Angle-closure glaucoma
  • Normal-tension glaucoma
  • Congenital glaucoma

At View Pointe Vision + Style, we use state-of-the-art technology to monitor your vision and ocular health. We have 2 methods of tonometry to measure your eye’s intraocular pressure, which can help us diagnose glaucoma.

  • iCare Tonometer: The iCare tonometer requires no eyedrops, anesthesia, or air puff when testing your intraocular pressure. A very light probe makes momentary, gentle contact with your cornea that most patients report as an overall pleasant experience.
  • Goldmann Applanation Tonometer: The Goldmann tonometer presses a flat-tipped cone into the cornea to measure the pressure needed to flatten it. You’ll be given numbing drops before having this test.

Treating Glaucoma

If we detect and diagnose you with glaucoma, treatments are more successful when started early. It’s paramount that you attend regular eye examinations to monitor your eyes for early signs of eye diseases.

Depending on your unique situation, we may refer you to an ophthalmologist for further evaluation and treatment. Glaucoma can typically be treated with eye drops or laser surgery, but that will be contingent on your condition’s severity.

We’ll work hard to ensure you and your eyes are happy and healthy.
