Reclaim Comfort for Your Eyes

Dry eye is a condition that causes gritty, dry, uncomfortable eyes that can make performing daily activities difficult. When the eyes don’t produce enough good quality tears, the tears can evaporate too quickly and leave the eyes feeling dry.

The tear film is made up of 3 layers to keep the eyes lubricated and moist. If one of the layers is missing or is insufficient to keep the layers in balance, the tears will not be able to keep the eyes comfortable.

What Causes Dry Eye?

If your eyes aren’t able to produce an adequate amount of tears to keep the eyes lubricated, they will begin to feel dry. Decreased tear production is commonly caused by:

If your tears evaporate too quickly, your eyes will be left feeling dry and gritty. Increased tear evaporation is commonly caused by:

  • Dry, windy climates
  • Blinking less often, which occurs when you’re concentrating

Eyelid problems, like inward or outward turning eyelids (entropion/ectropion)

The tear film is made up of 3 layers, oil, water, and mucus. If these 3 layers are out of balance, tear composition will be weak, and your tears may evaporate too quickly or not spread adequately over the entire eye.

  • Oily Layer: The outermost layer of the tear film is made up of meibum, an oil secreted from the meibomian glands. The oily layer keeps tears from evaporating and helps them spread across the surface of the eye.
  • Watery Layer: The watery layer makes up most of the tear’s substance and helps wash away bacteria and small particles that could irritate the eye.
  • Mucus Layer: The mucus layer keeps the tears adhered to the eyes, helping the eyes stay lubricated and comfortable.

Treating Dry Eye

At View Pointe Vision + Style, we want your eyes to feel comfortable and healthy. If you’re experiencing dry eye symptoms, please give us a call to see how we can help. Symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Stinging, burning, or scratchy eyes
  • Stringy mucus in or around your eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eye redness
  • Discomfort wearing contact lenses
  • Overly watery or sensitive eyes

We offer a few different methods to treat dry eye, mitigate symptoms, and help your eyes feel comfortable again.

Artificial tears are eye drops you can get by prescription or you over-the-counter. Depending on what you need them, we can help point you in the right direction for what brand and type you need.

Artificial tears can help provide you with temporary relief from dry eye symptoms, and you can apply them yourself as needed.

We provide heated eye masks that you can wear to relieve symptoms of dry eye by treating the underlying problem. If your dry eye is due to a blockage in the meibomian glands, heated eye masks can soften and remove the blockage.

We can administer the eye mask in-office, or recommend a brand to purchase for use at home.
